About This Project
The Aryan Recognition Tool consists of:
- a Python image scraper for collecting images of SS officers, Holocaust architects and perpetrators that are available online
- a data set composed of roughly 1000 aryan faces and 1000 non-aryan faces
- a service using FaceNet MTCNN’s existing face detection and extraction models to compare a submitted image of a face to those of “aryan” faces
- a set of resources to help users understand the conceptualization of Aryan identity and the misuse of face recognition in racial profiling.
This tool, and this website is a proof-of-concept developed by an artist, a designer and a developer as a reminder of the ongoing harm of racial profiling, and how it may be perpetuated by face recognition and machine learning.
This project was made possible by the Media Arts Concept to Realization grant by the Canada Council for the Arts.
