About

About This Project

The Aryan Recognition Tool consists of:

  • a Python image scraper for collecting images of SS officers, Holocaust architects and perpetrators that are available online
  • a data set composed of roughly 1000 aryan faces and 1000 non-aryan faces
  • a service using FaceNet MTCNN’s existing face detection and extraction models to compare a submitted image of a face to those of “aryan” faces
  • a set of resources to help users understand the conceptualization of Aryan identity and the misuse of face recognition in racial profiling.

This tool, and this website is a proof-of-concept developed by an artist, a designer and a developer as a reminder of the ongoing harm of racial profiling, and how it may be perpetuated by face recognition and machine learning.
